She’s been an anti-war activist, fitness guru, and Oscar winner. Now, the 81-year-old actress Jane Fonda is lighting up TV screens in Netflix’s Grace & Frankie.
In the comedy, Fonda plays a polished businesswoman who moves in with the hippie-ish Frankie after their husbands become a couple. Season 5 of the Emmy-nominated show premieres January 18 on Netflix.
Fonda’s decades-long career is clearly going strong. Here’s a look back at her life, including how much the actress is worth.
Fonda comes from a famous Hollywood family
Fonda comes from a family of actors. Her father is Henry Fonda, who appeared in films like The Grapes of Wrath and On Golden Pond. Her mother was Frances Seymour Brokaw, a socialite who died when Fonda was 12 years old.
Fonda’s brother is the actor Peter Fonda, who starred in Easy Rider. Her niece is the actress Bridget Fonda (daughter of Peter). Her son Troy Garity is also an actor.
She’s had an eclectic career
Fonda’s Hollywood career began in 1960, when she appeared in the movie Tall Story opposite Anthony Perkins. Her role in 1968’s Barbarella, directed by her then-husband Roger Vadim, made her a sex symbol, but she soon refocused on more serious roles. In the late 1960s and early 1970s she starred in well-received movies like They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? and Klute. In the late ’70s and ‘80s she appeared in Coming Home (for which she won her second Oscar) and 9 to 5.
In the 1970s, she also became known for her political activism, particularly her opposition to the Vietnam War and controversial visit to Hanoi in 1972. She married political activist Tom Hayden in 1973. (They divorced in 1990.)
Over the years, Fonda’s been involved in many philanthropic causes, especially those related to women’s rights and reproductive health, including the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential, which she established in 1994. In 2001, she established the Jane Fonda Center at Emory University in Atlanta, which focuses on adolescent reproductive health. In 2005, she founded the Women’s Media Center with Gloria Steinem and Robin Morgan, which aims to increase the visibility of women in the media.
Fonda has written several books, including a cookbook, a memoir, My Life So Far, and a best-selling sex ed book for teens.
Her workout videos
She might be an award-winning actress, but to some people Fonda will always be best-known for the workout videos she released in the early 1980s. After opening a aerobics studio and writing a fitness book, she was persuaded to star in a workout video on a then-new medium: home video. The result, Jane Fonda’s Workout, became one of the best-selling tapes of the decade and helped turn leotards and legwarmers into a fashion trend. Her last workout video came out in 2012.

After a long and varied career, Fonda is now worth $200 million, according to an estimate from Celebrity Net Worth. Some of her wealth may come from a large settlement she received after divorcing her media mogul husband Ted Turner in 2001. She walked away from the 10-year marriage with $70 million, according to the Telegraph. Later, she sold both her wedding dress and opal engagement ring at auction, along with the leotard she wore for her famous fitness video.
The engagement ring sold for nearly $20,000, the antique wedding gown went for $3,125, and the striped leotard fetched $5,000.
