Emmerdale’s Steve Halliwell, who plays Zak Dingle in the soap, has revealed he was disappointed when his character cheated on his beloved wife Lisa (Jane Cox).
The Emmerdale cast member had an affair with Joanie Wright (Denise Black) back in 2015 when she was his lodger, which was later revealed at Christmas.
The big reveal ended Zak and Lisa’s marriage and he went on to marry Joanie, who died suddenly in 2017.
Zak told Digital Spy: “I was disappointed when Zak had an affair. Personally, I think it made a good story but there was something about Zak and Lisa that I felt should remain solid.
“But that’s not up to me to decide, so you do the story and the scenes as best you can.”
He continued: “So for me, the fact that ended sadly for the character of Joanie because she died, I think for me I thought: ‘The one thing to do is get back with Lisa for the story and for the audience as well’.
“I don’t think they wanted him to have an affair – well they’d tell me in the streets, ‘What are you doing, going off with that other woman?’ Well it’s not me, it’s the character, but you can’t explain that!
The actor also admitted he thought that earlier episodes of the soap “were funnier in those days” and that he hoped they would swap the serious moments for “more funny times”.
They are trying their best to make the most of Lisa’s last days in the Dales, and a big Dingle wedding is their first plan.
Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
