Unlucky in love: NYPD hunt man who dropped ring down grate during proposal

New York City Police are trying to track down an unlucky bridegroom who got so excited while proposing, he dropped his ring down a Times Square grate.

The NYPD shared footage to social media of the unidentified man, still on one knee, accidentally dropping the ring before leaning down to peer through the dark grate in the popular Manhattan tourist district.

His partner joined him on the ground but the couple could not retrieve it – police said it was about a 2.4 metre drop to the bottom.

Officers have since recovered and cleaned the ring, the NYPD later tweeting: "WANTED for dropping his fiancee's ring in @TimesSquareNYC!

"She said Yes – but he was so excited that he dropped the ring in a grate.

"Our @NYPDSpecialops officers rescued it & would like to return it to the happy couple. Help us find them?"

The department's Midtown North Precinct has also joined the search, tweeting a plea for the couple to come forward, as well as a photo of the ring and a photo of them.

"Help us find the couple [whose] marriage proposal went horribly wrong after their engagement ring fell down the drain in #TimesSquare," the tweet read.

NYPD's plea to reunite the couple with the ring has since been shared more than 6000 times.

Every day, more than 350,000 people visit Times Square.
