I’m very specific about the types of products I use on my hair. The texture is coily and porous and has a hard time staying hydrated, so I deep condition a lot and rely heavily on thick creams and butters. Additionally, I get skeptical when I see mass beauty brands diving into textured hair care — more often than not, the products aren’t as moisturizing as they claim to be — but I didn’t let that stop me from putting some products from Dove’s new Amplified Textures Collection to the test.
The new collection launched back in January with a lineup of six products that are all sold in drugstores for $7 each. Though they’re all specially designed to care for textured hair, each item’s label specifies the type of hair it works best for, meaning some products work best on curly and coily hair, while others are best used on wavy hair. I was excited to give a few of the products a try, but the biggest standout was the brand’s hair mask.
I’ll start by saying that I’m a sucker for hair treatments — like I said, my hair needs a lot of moisture — so I went into testing the Dove Beauty Moisture Recovery Mask ($7) with high hopes. The mask is infused with honey to deep condition the hair and help it to retain moisture, and to my surprise, it really delivered. I put this on my hair after cleansing with the line’s hydrating shampoo, then parted my hair up into eight different sections and slapped on a generous amount before twisting each section up. I was immediately impressed by how soft my hair felt, and this was before I let the product sit for a while.
After applying it, I threw on a plastic cap and left the mask on my hair for about 30 minutes before rinsing it out and applying a leave-in conditioner. What made me a fan of this mask was the fact that it left my hair feeling moisturized but not too greasy. It also smells great and made my hair feel nice and soft. I tend to be selective about what goes into my hair, but you can trust this is one item I’ll gladly be adding to my regular routine.
