Having strong, healthy strands can sometimes elude even the most beauty-savvy among us. That’s because small everyday routines can easily damage any weakened follicles. Since wet hair is much more delicate than dry hair, it’s best to avoid washing your mane too often. Skipping days and using dry shampoo instead of a full wash leaves room for healthy hair to grow without a higher risk of breakage (via Allure).
When you do wash your hair, however, take note of a few common practices that may be costing you precious strands.
If the first thing you do as you step foot out of the shower is quickly run a towel through your hair, you may want to think again. Instead, use an old t-shirt to absorb excess moisture. Hairstylist Mark Townsend concurs, saying that t-shirts “don’t rough up the cuticle as much, so you don’t have to work as hard to smooth the hair and make it look healthy.”
Towel drying can be too rough for your strands
If you find that your hair is frizzy, it may be a sign to take it easier on your mane. When you shake a towel all over your head, you can rough up the cuticle and dry out your strands (via HuffPost). Celebrity hairstylist and author, Monae Everett says that towel drying “can worsen split ends and cause small craters along the hair shaft, weakening the hair.”
If a t-shirt isn’t really your style, you can also use a microfiber towel to reduce frizz and absorb any wetness. “Blot and squeeze your hair dry instead of roughly drying it by vigorously moving up and down the hair shaft,” Everett recommends. By being more gentle with your hair, you decrease the risk of breakage, split ends, and further damage. Once you’ve blotted your hair, the best way to keep it healthy is to let it air dry after layering with a leave-in conditioner.
Lather, rinse, repeat (every other day).
