Anonymous threats shut down Lifetime’s “Surviving R.Kelly” documentary screening at NeueHouse Madison Square early Tuesday evening.
“Several anonymous threats were called in. As a precaution, the network elected to evacuate the building. The safety and security of our panel, guests and staff is of paramount importance to Lifetime,” a Lifetime spokesperson said in a statement.
Gretchen Carlson, Angela Yee and Tarana Burke were to appear on a panel following the screening before the threats shut it down. “At @lifetimetv R Kelly doc screening tonight with SVP Brie Bryant & @taranaburke when gun threat comes in & all evacuated,” Carlson tweeted.
Dream Hampton executive produced the doc, which tells the stories of several women who have accused Kelly of sexually abusing underage women through the years. The women featured were at the screening and blame Kelly for the evacuation.
“Cops were coming in. The girls were screaming, ‘F–k R.Kelly, I’m sure it was him. He’s trying to mind f–k our heads,’” author and attendee James Hester told Page Six.
An event insider added, “Everyone thinks it was an intimidation tactic from R.Kelly’s team to try to silence everyone.”
A spokesperson for the venue said: “NeueHouse has always existed to celebrate creatives, entrepreneurs and activists with important and meaningful stories to share. The safety of our storytellers and of our members is always our first priority. Tonight was no different. Despite non-credible threats called in during tonight’s screening, we followed appropriate safety protocols in collaboration with the NYPD and elected to postpone the event. We stand by the creative women bringing these heroic stories to light.”
