Mary Higgins Clark, author of On the Street Where You Live and Where Are the Children?, has died at 92 years old.

The mystery writer was dubbed the ‘queen of suspense,’ publishing more than 50 bestsellers in her life.

She died peacefully Friday night of natural causes in Naples, Florida, surrounded by friends and family.

Simon & Schuster announced her passing Friday in a brief statement posted to Twitter. 

They tweeted: ‘It is with deep sadness we say goodbye to the “Queen of Suspense” Mary Higgins Clark, author of over 40 bestselling suspense titles. 

‘She passed away peacefully this evening, January 31, at the age of 92 surrounded by family and friends.’

The publisher’s president and CEO Carolyn Reidy also released a statement of her own.

According to Deadline, she wrote: ‘She was, simply, a remarkable woman who overcame an early life of hardship and challenges, never doubting her ability as a natural-born storyteller (and she was one for the ages), and who persevered through trial and rejection until she at last achieved her Holy Grail of being a published author.’

Reidy also detailed how Clark would go out of her way to meet her readers on every one of her book tours. 

Clark’s books Where Are the Children? and A Stranger Is Watching have been adapted into feature films.

Her daughter Carol Higgins Clark has carried on her mother’s legacy, becoming a popular mystery author herself. 

Mary was born on Christmas Eve of 1927 in the Bronx of New York City.
