‘I cannot begin to understand your experience, but what I can do is stand by you,’ writes the frontman of My Chemical Romance in a tribute post for the protests against police brutality.
AceShowbiz –My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has penned a lengthy statement pledging his support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
The singer penned the tribute as protests against police brutality continue to sweep the U.S. following the death of George Floyd, an African-American man who died on May 25 at the hands of Minnesota police officers.
In the post, which was shared to Instagram on Thursday, June 04, the star vowed to educate himself and revealed, “I am, and will remain, inspired by your rage.”
“When the bullets penetrate, or the tear gas finds its mark,” he wrote. “When generations of enabled systematic oppression, and its guardians, work against you. When opportunities are not afforded to you because of who you were born to be.”
He added: “Having the time, and more importantly the safety, to consider ones (sic) words is a privilege for me, along with many other privileges I possess due to the colour of my skin. And these are privileges not everyone benefits from.”
Way also expressed his sorrow over the difficulties people of colour have faced.
“I cannot begin to understand your experience, but what I can do is stand by you,” he added. “Continue the internal discussions we are having about ways to affect change in non-performative ways. Meaningful ways beyond this moment, beyond this gesture.”
Way joins a long list of stars who have pledged their support for the movement, including Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Halsey. Other celebrities, like Ellen Pompeo, Kehlani, John Boyega, Jamie Foxx, Zoe Kravitz, and Tessa Thompson, have also been getting involved in the demonstrations taking place worldwide.
