Former England rugby player Ugo Monye, 38, has revealed that he has split from his wife, speaking out just days before he takes to the dancefloor on the new series of Strictly Come Dancing. The split from his wife Lucy comes a week after the devastating death of his father from prostate cancer.

At times things have seemed a bit overwhelming but it’s been a tough period for us both.

Addressing his split from his wife of five years, the former rugby player told how it’s been a difficult time for both of them.

Ugo said: “It’s been hard. At times things have seemed a bit overwhelming but it’s been a tough period for us both.”

The star went on to explain that there wasn’t a defining moment that caused the breakdown of their relationship, but instead revealed it happened over the course of the pandemic.

He said: “In some relationships there is a moment, a ‘thing’, that breaks the couple.

“It can be an exterior influence. It can be anything. But with us it was a number of things.

“We weren’t in a volatile relationship, we never hated each other and there was no third party.

“Forget the Strictly curse — it’s the Covid curse! We ended up where we ended up,” Ugo added.

Ugo and Lucy share two daughters together, Phoenix, four and Ruby, one.

The pair met in 2014 after being introduced by a mutual friend.

The sportsman added that his and Lucy’s priority is now “very much the kids”.

He went on to say that despite the split, he and his wife are “in a good place” and have even discussed the possibility of going on a holiday as a family next year.

Despite the rugby star moving out of the family’s West London home, he and Lucy still tag each other in pictures on social media.

Ugo will find out who his new Strictly partner is during the upcoming launch show, but admitted that looking for love on the dancefloor is the furthest thing from his mind.

“I’m not thinking about romance,” he told The Sun.

Addressing the decision he and Lucy made to split, Ugo told how it hadn’t come “out of the blue”.

He said: “We’d had one big conversation a while ago when we put everything on the table, then smaller conversations about certain other things.

“So when the final decision to split was made, it wasn’t totally isolated or out of the blue.”

The star also admitted that he hadn’t told many of his friends as it’s too “painful” to keep having the same conversation.

He even revealed that he and Lucy attended birthday parties together last weekend, adding that he doesn’t think anyone had guessed they had split.

The new series of Strictly Come Dancing starts on September 18 on BBC One.
