New York Magazine‘s celeb site TheCut.com has hastily taken down a “hot take” gossip article that basically alleged Priyanka Chopra was scamming Nick Jonas into a fraudulent marriage just for the publicity and branding. The article, which might have started out as some sort of attempt to call out the excesses of the couple’s recent wedding in Jodhpur, India, seemed to descend just into personal attacks against Nick and Priyanka.
Among other opinion points, the author wrote –
Nicholas Jonas married into a fraudulent relationship against his will this past Saturday … All Nick wanted was a possible fling with Hollywood’s latest It Woman, but instead he wound up staring straight at a life sentence with a global scam artist … Nick, if you’re reading this, find that horse and gallop away as fast as you can!”
Nick’s brother Joe Jonas blasted the article.
Today, after the story was taken down, Joe shared an Instagram post warmly welcoming “Pri” to the family. Meanwhile, Joe’s fiance, actress Sophie Turner, who served as one of Priyanka’s bridesmaids, could not help herself from jumping to the newlyweds’ defense.
The article also caused an uproar in the Indian press. There, many saw the article as not just playing into racist themes that an older woman of color had somehow tricked a naive white man into marrying her for less than genuine reasons — i.e., that she somehow needed a white man in her life to give her career positive PR.
In addition, many felt that the it was an example of the Western press suggesting that one of Bollywood’s biggest female actresses had not earned her success legitimately. This sentiment was most loudly expressed by other Bollywood actresses – though the condemnation seemed pretty roundly supported by the Indian film community and the Indian press.
Today, an note on The Cut replaced the actual article with an apology.
Last night, The Cut published a post about Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra’s relationship that shouldn’t have gone up. We’ve received dozens of messages from readers expressing their anger. We want you to know that we hear you and we’re sorry. The whole piece missed the mark. There is no good explanation for this other than human error and poor judgement. This was a mistake, and we apologize to our readers and to Priyanka and Nick.”
Indian publication DNA published a comment from Priyanka this afternoon which addressed the article. Asked about the article at an event last night, Priyanka said
I don’t even want to react or comment. It’s not even in my stratosphere. I’m in a happy place at this moment. These kinds of random things can’t disturb it.”
So far, Nick does not seem to have commented on the article.
We have below one of The Cut’s (now-removed) tweets for the piece below. We also have Joe’s Instagram post officially welcoming his new sister-in-law “Pri” to the family.
Super Married! I Love You Both! Welcome to the Family Pri! Congratulations! My face hurts from all the smiling this week. ❤️
