DaBaby wanted to make sure there was no bad blood between him and Jojo Siwa. He wanted that so bad that he offered her a spot on the Grammys stage with him.
In an interview with ET ahead of the 2021 Grammys, for which the 29-year-old rapper is nominated for four awards (Best Rap/Sung Performance, Best Rap Song, Best Record for “Rockstar,” and Best Rap Performance for “BOP”), he shared that he asked Siwa to join him after an unwilling internet feud saw the two head-to-head just weeks ago. He used the singer’s name in a freestyle version of “Beatbox,” which drew the ire of some of her passionate fanbase (via Billboard).
“We’re 1000% JoJo Siwa fans. We love her, we actually reached out to see if she wanted to perform with me at the Grammys,” DaBaby said. “But I heard she’s somewhere working on a project of her own.”
DaBaby realized most people didn't understand his play on words
In a freestyle titled “Beatbox,” DaBaby tried to make a play on words about himself using Siwa’s name. “You a b**ch, JoJo Siwa, b**ch,” he rapped (via Billboard). In the accompanying music video, he also held up a picture of the 17-year-old .
When Twitter wondered what his problem was with Jojo Siwa, he couldn’t help but laugh at the mix-up. DaBaby’s real name is Jonathan, for which Jojo is a common nickname. “Siwa” was a play on the phrase “see why.”
“😂😂😂😂 I love Twitter bruh,” he wrote. He later assured his fans and Siwa’s that he reached out to her to make sure there were no hard feelings. He also tweeted it out to be sure. “@itsjojosiwa my 3 year old princess is your number 1 fan. I bought her every product you have out. She think she you. 😂,” he tweeted. “Don’t let em trick you into thinking I’d ever have a problem with you. My word play just went over their heads. All love on my end shawty, Keep shinning!”
