Good Morning Britain co-anchor Kate Garraway, 53, has recalled the precious moment her husband Derek Draper responded to an intimate conversation. Derek, also 53, is still recovering after contracting the coronavirus in March 2020.

The journalist, who has released her debut memoir detailing the tragic ordeal her family has experienced over the past 12 months, has spoken of Derek’s slow recovery.

Derek became the UK’s longest inpatient after being admitted to hospital in March 2020 before being placed in a medically induced coma.

The former political lobbyist was released from hospital in April after spending a year in intensive care, with him now recovering at the family home in London.

Despite being able to recover at home, his constant medical requirements are similar to being at the hospital, says Kate.

Now, the mum-of-two has spoken of a miraculous conversation she had with her husband over a video call, admitting that he “sobbed” during their chat.

In an extract from her book, The Power Of Hope, Kate says that she spoke to her husband about one of their first dates, dancing away to Aerosmith’s hit single, I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.

Speaking about their video call, Kate noted that while gazing into her husband’s eyes, it reminded her of the night in question during which she had “squirmed” as she attempted to stop looking at Derek.

“As I stared into that iPad screen I said to him: ‘This reminds me of that date – do you remember it? When you forced me to stare into your eyes. I kept trying to look away but you wouldn’t let me'”, she wrote.

The Power of Hope, which has been serialised through the Daily Mail, Kate went on to say: “I carried on chatting about it, then asked him directly: ‘Do you remember?’ And his face started to crumple and contort in a strange way.

“‘Don’t worry!’ I said, ‘it doesn’t matter if you don’t,'” she said encouragingly.

“I was concerned I was distressing him. But his face continued to crumple and I suddenly realised he was crying – actual tears streaming down his cheeks.”

The journalist noted that after asking her husband if he remembered the night, he responded by nodding.

The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! campmate went on to write: “‘Yes,’ he mouthed.

“‘Yes… yes.’ Then, to top it off, ‘Of course,’ as clear as a bell. He was in there! He knew me!

“I told him he was amazing, that he was a miracle, that it was all going to be OK, at which he sobbed and sobbed. ‘I’m going to save you,’ I said. ‘I’m going to get you out, I promise.”

However, just moments after, Derek slipped into another state of unconsciousness, with Kate hoping that a recovery “could happen again” after he had “come up from that deep ocean”.

Speaking last month on This Morning, Kate revealed how Derek was now able to say some words, but was unable to hold a full conversation.

“He remembers extraordinary things, he’s saying some words – but it’s definitely not a conversation.

“He’s physically very changed, everything has to be done for him.”
