Kate Garraway has revealed that her son had to self-isolate at home after one of his school classmates tested positive for Covid.

The Good Morning Britain host has endured a challenging year with her husband Derek Draper's lengthy and gruelling battle with coronavirus and recently admitted that he is a "long way out of the woods".

And on Wednesday morning's instalment of the daytime show, the 54 year old explained that concerns over catching the virus reached her son Billy, 11, after a fellow pupil at his school tested positive for coronavirus.

The topic came up as Kate and her co-host Ben Shepherd discussed government figures which revealed that over a million British children were forced to self-isolate after a classmate caught Covid.

Figures have shown that one in every seven pupils had to take part in lessons from home because of a positive case at school.

And Kate admitted that her son Billy was "one of them last week".

Adding further context, she said: "One of his band tested positive, so to be safe, they were all at home," before cheekily quipping: "I mean he wasn't heartbroken."

Kate, her son Billy and her daughter Darcey, 15, were left devastated when Derek, 53, was rushed to hospital in March 2020 after his body reacted severely to coronavirus.

Derek returned to the family home earlier this year in April and needs round-the-clock care as he recovers from the effects of what the virus has done to his body.

And in a recent episode of GMB, Kate explained that while "some things have improved", Derek has "huge challenges ahead".

Kate said: "He's very up and down, we're certainly a long way out of the woods. Being at home we have seen some things improve… having family around, the children around has provided stimulation.

"The problem is, you latch onto the positives – which is good because you have to."

Kate continued: "There's absolutely no doubt that he has huge challenges ahead, and he knows I'm here with you this morning."
