Kevin Clifton has spoken of the “accepted wisdom” that Len Goodman is his godfather. The professional dancers appeared alongside each other on Strictly Come Dancing for a number of years.
It’s when people assume stuff that it annoys me
Speaking in the latest episode of The Kevin Clifton Show podcast, released today, the 38-year-old set the record straight on the rumour.
He said some viewers had believed he had a family connection to the BBC show’s former judge, before suggesting it had started on a Strictly forum.
The performer said this had surrounded claims that the programme favoured him over other pros.
Kevin slammed the suggestions while speaking about his “third or fourth” final, before quitting last year.
The latest instalment of the series saw him discuss what happened alongside dancer, stage star and TV presenter, Anthony Rutherford.
Kevin recalled: “Someone wrote, it became a thing apparently… I never look at the forums anymore.
“Apparently it became this big thing on a forum, because someone sent it to me.”
He then went into specifics at what he was referring to, and how some readers had taken it as read.
The stage favourite continued: “It became generally accepted wisdom that the only reason that apparently Strictly was pushing me at the time.
“And making sure I was in the final – nothing to do with working hard…
“Making sure it had to be Kevin the golden boy, because Len Goodman is his godfather.”
Anthony could be heard laughing at his story, seemingly shocked by the news.
“Pardon?” Kevin quipped. “Apparently it became like common knowledge that I was Len Goodman’s godson, which is b******s.
“It’s when people assume stuff that it annoys me.”
Len was a panellist on Strictly ever since it launched back in 2004, before leaving in 2016.
He also held the same role in the US version Dancing with the Stars from 2005 to 2019.
Kevin first appeared in the eleventh series in 2011, taking part in seven seasons all together before bidding farewell.
During that time he made the final no less than five times, including on his first try with Susanna Reid.
He also reached the finale with Frankie Bridge, Kellie Bright and Louise Redknapp.
While also partnering Susan Calman and Anneka Rice, it was with now-girlfriend Stacey Dooley that he lifted the Glitterball in 2019.
