Monty Don: Gardeners’ World host sad after garden ‘ravaged’ as he shares tough decision

Gardeners’ World: Monty Don warns against ‘overfeeding’ plants

Gardeners’ World host Monty Don regularly updates his fans with images of his beloved garden, but has today revealed how one section has been “ravaged”. The gardening expert took to Instagram to share the devastation caused to his box hedging.

The 65-year-old shared a series of photos of his stunning garden at his Tudor farmhouse.

The first snap showed the once blooming hedge now full of patches with the leaves gone and the stems remaining.

Monty explained that Box Blight – a disease that affects plants – had destroyed the hedge.

The BBC presenter had to make a “sad” decision to remove it altogether.

Monty wrote: “There was a time when our box hedging was one of the best things about the garden – especially in winter.

“But Box blight has ravaged it and we have removed a lot already.”

He added: “In a week or two it will be grubbed up from the Jewel Garden and burnt.

“Sad – but nothing stays the same. Time for a change.”

In another snap, Monty showcased his box garden in the summer months, with his plants in full bloom.

Fans were quick to comment on the post, as many people shared their thoughts.

Another remarked: “That’s a shame as it looks lovely, but for this reason, I’d never had it. Would be so disappointed if it got ruined.”

“See change as a chance, Monty. We had to dig out 90 per cent of ours a few years ago and afterward were glad of it,” a third assured.

While another person added: “Amazing. Change is good Monty, onward, and upwards.”

Monty’s Jewel Garden is located at his Hertfordshire home that he shares with his wife Sarah Don.

The Gardeners’ World host has previously revealed that the inspiration behind the garden was in celebration of the couple’s jewellery business, which was launched in the 1980s.

Monty wrote on his website that “everything revolves around” their Jewel Garden, which is often seen on the BBC show.

He added: “[The garden] is brash, extravagant and high maintenance!”

Gardeners’ World airs Friday on BBC One at 8pm.
