Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, has been on a tour of Scotland over the past week. The wife of Prince William wore a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings.
It was soon discovered the pieces were given to Kate by the Queen to wear.
It is far from the first time this has happened. In fact, the Queen has loaned many hugely valuable pieces to Kate.
This is not an honour bestowed to just anyone.
Most royal gems have an interesting history, and the sapphire and diamond earrings Kate borrowed are no different.
In fact, the set has linked to the Middle East. A gift, the set was given to the Queen in 1979 by Sheikh Rashid of Dubai.
This collection of gems was so impressive, according to Leslie Field author of Queen’s Jewels: The Personal Collection of Elizabeth II, the Queen “exclaimed in amazement” when she saw it.
The demi-parure was made up of a necklace, earrings and a ring.
However, interesting, the earrings in this set were not those worn by Kate, although they are made from gems in the set.

The necklace in the set is made up of loops of diamonds with large sapphires held in them.
Her Majesty shortened the necklace and had the remaining loops repurposed.
The pretty earrings worn by Kate are these remaining loops.
The Queen has worn the loop versions of the earrings last in 2009, so these gems have not been seen for 12 or so years.
As the Queen does not wear them so often, they make a perfect addition to Kate’s jewellery wardrobe.
Kate often wears sapphires.
These include her engagement ring and earrings once belonging to Princess Diana.

“I’m hugely grateful to everyone who is playing a part in the rollout – thank you for everything you are doing.”
