How to make a snowball drink – from mixing your advocaat to the classic ingredients for the Christmas cocktail recipe

The festive favourite has been a popular choice of Christmas cocktail for years – this is how you can make them.

How do you make a snowball drink?

A snowball is a cocktail often drunk over the festive period and comprises of advocaat and lemonade, served with a squeeze of fresh lime juice.

It’s an easy drink to master and, typically, the drink should comprise of one part advocaat to three parts cold lemonade – though you can up your measures of advocaat to lemonade to taste.

The drink is best served over ice.

Simple fill a glass with ice, add your shots of advocaat and top with lemonade. You can then add a squeeze of lime.

What are the ingredients and how can I make my own advocaat?

The ingredients for a standard snowball are:

  • Ice cubes
  • Advocaat
  • Lemonade
  • Lime juice

You can either mix the drink with shop bought advocaat or make your own.

To make your own advocaat, you will need:

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 250g powdered sugar
  • 125ml brandy
  • 300g whipping cream


Put two large, very fresh, eggs plus the egg yolks in a mixing bowl and whisk until frothy.

Sift the sugar and slowly add to the eggs.

Add the alcohol and stir well.

Beat the whipping cream until slightly stiff and then add to the egg mixture.

Store in an airtight bottle and shake well before use.

Keep it in the fridge.
