Last night the film trailer for ‘Spencer’, starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana was released to much acclaim, and the outfits seen in the minute and a half trailer brought back amazing memories of the Princess of Wales. The film, which has been directed by Pablo Larrain, who also directed ‘Jackie’, will be unveiled at the Venice Film Festival on September 3.
There have been many films and biopics about the Princess of Wales, however ‘Spencer’ is set across a three-day period during the Christmas holidays at Sandringham in the early 1990s.
The outfits that could be seen in the trailer are uncanny in their resemblance to the Princess of Wales’s real outfits.
The first feature image released for the film, featured Kristen Stewart wearing a black blouse and red tweed coat, which the producers borrowed from Chanel’s autumn/winter 1988/89 ready-to-wear archive collection.
The actress also wore a veiled hat, which was inspired by the outfit Diana wore on Christmas Day at Sandringham in 1993, the year after she separated from Prince Charles.
Earlier this year the film studio released another still image of Kristen in a red and green checked blazer over a cream turtleneck and pearl earrings.
This is a similar suit the real Diana wore during a visit to Portsmouth in 1989.
Just a few days ago, the official film poster was released with Kristen in a stunning ballgown, crouched down on the floor.
This dress, designed by Jacqueline Durran, is not an exact recreation, however.
According to a spokesperson for NEON, Jacqueline decided against copying outfits, instead taking inspiration from various looks to be original but still remain true to Princess Diana’s style.
Now that the official trailer has been released, royal fans can see all the outfits to be expected from the film, which did not disappoint.
One of Diana’s favourite casual jackets was a Philadelphia Eagles varsity jacket.
At the time, according to royal commentators this item was believed to be too American for a British royal.
This jacket, however, made it into the ‘Spencer’ trailer where Diana can be seen confiding to a friend on the beach.
In another scene, Diana is seen distressed, running through the Sandringham gardens wearing a yellow skirt suit and hat.
This bears striking similarity to a purple outfit worn by Diana at a church ceremony in 1989, however Jacqueline appears to have changed it to yellow.
Another outfit which paid homage to a real-life fashion moment was a dress Princess Diana wore in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1983 during her tour of Australia with Prince Charles.
This suggests that even though the film is set across a single weekend, there will be a few flashbacks earlier on in the Wales’s marriage.
Larrain said in his Venice Film Festival statement: “Building the character of Diana, we didn’t just want to create a replicated image of her, but use cinema and its tools to create an internal world that struck the right balance between the mystery and fragility of her character.”
Kristen Stewart released a statement saying: “Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life.
“It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name, Spencer.
“It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”
