Cadbury’s new Mini Egg Easter Egg is named 2021’s must-have chocolate treat in Good Housekeeping’s blind taste test – while Aldi pips M&S to win best supermarket hot cross buns

Cadbury’s Mini Eggs Easter egg came out on top in this year’s Good Housekeeping Institute annual blind taste test.
Th £12 treat, sold exclusively at Tesco, received an almost perfect score wowing judges with its distinctively sweet and creamy taste, and won praise for the addition of speckled candy shell embedded within the giant milk chocolate egg.
Alongside giving their verdict on the best choccie treat for those with a sweet tooth, the Good Housekeeping Institute’s experts also picked out this year’s best hot cross buns.
Aldi beat M&S to the top with its Luxury Fruited Hot Cross Buns, priced at just 99p for four.

The Good Housekeeping Institute had to conduct its annual blind taste tests slightly differently this year due to Covid-19 restrictions.
They invited brands and grocers to send in their ‘Best Easter Egg for 2021’ instead of separating each treat into official testing categories. The 42 eggs were then tested by a combination of experts and consumers.
Once the eggs had been assessed, the judges worked out the top-scorers for a range of different consumers – from those who prefer to shop own-brand, to those following a vegan diet.
Waitrose delivered the most impressive own-brand Easter egg, scoring 90/100 for its Waitrose & Partners No.1 Hidden Truffles Nutty Milk Chocolate Easter Egg with Salted Caramel Truffles, priced at £10 for 220g.
Tasters loved that the egg included four golden salted caramel truffles on the side, and the sweet and salty hit of the egg, which is laced with salt crystals and almonds.
The judges selected the Doisy & Dam 70% Dark Chocolate Easter Egg with Almond Nuttercups as the best choice for vegans.
The £8 for 260g treat scored 82/100, with testers gushing about the notes of red fruit and coffee in this egg, as well as the two packets of the brand’s beloved almond butter chocolate cups which accompany the egg.

Good Housekeeping’s consumer and expert panel also tasted 10 Classic Hot Cross Buns and eight Gluten Free Hot Cross Buns as part of its Easter round-up.
Despite missing this year’s top spot for overall hot cross buns, M&S achieved high marks in the Best Gluten Free category.
Its Made Without Hot Cross Buns, £2 for four, were praised for their nutmeg flavour and attractive glazed look, scoring 88/100.
Stacey Smith, who is Food and Drink Editor at the Good Housekeeping Institute, explained that their aim was to help consumers make an informed decision when shopping this Easter.
