With 3.81billion people estimated to be using the networks worldwide, it’s become apparent the platform has brought dramatic changes to the the ways we consume the news.
Recent data revealed by PostBeyond draws attention to the disparities that exist between each generation and their relationship to the hub.
Figures show that while older generations still resort to more traditional news platforms, the turn of the century saw millennials receive breaking news predominantly from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, and Instagram.
On average, almost 2 in 10 (18%) of boomers, over a third (34%) of Gen X and over a third of both millennial and Gen Z consume the news on social media platforms today.
But Generation Alpha – the demographic cohort succeeding generation Z – is predicted to spend 8 hours a day on social media, a 4% increase from their forerunners.
Nearly half (45%) of Generation Alpha are expected to get their news online, specifically from social media.
