How many Dream Team points would Erling Haaland have amassed this season?

Dream Team gaffers have enough decisions to make as it is but it’s natural to want as many options as possible when constructing an XI.

Every summer we eagerly await new arrivals, players who have the potential to take English football by storm.

Rumours concerning a Premier League switch for Erling Haaland are likely to follow the Norwegian throughout his career — until it happens of course.

After the 20-year-old’s brace against Sevilla – his Champions League tally now stands at 18 goals from 13 games – we thought it would fun to calculate how many Dream Team points he would have amassed this season if Borussia Dortmund were an eligible club.

GET KANE, FERNANDES, GREALISH AND GUNDOGAN ALL TO SCORE THIS SUNDAY AT 45/1 (WAS 36/1)!

We combed through his statistics in all the relevant competitions, even noting his WhoScored match ratings, to arrive at a grand total of 212 points!

That would make him the second best Dream Team player in 2020/21 at this stage, with only Harry Kane (£7.2m) boasting a superior tally (234 points).

Haaland has scored 25 goals in the 23 games that would be included in Dream Team (league, domestic cup, European competition) and has provided four assists.

What’s interesting is that he would have five Star Man awards which, why relatively good going, is perhaps below what we would expect of player averaging a goal every game.

For comparison, Kane has nine Star Man awards and Nick Pope (£3.6m) has six.

It’s notable that in some games he is barely involved until suddenly bursting into life to seize a goalscoring opportunity — while this is the mark of a natural poacher it also means his ratings are not always as high as someone who did not watch the games would expect.

Saying that, only four player have a higher average rating in the Bundesliga this season while Lionel Messi is the only player with a higher average rating in the Champions League.

And let’s not forget, if he were a Premier League player he would an extra competition available to him in the form of the EFL Cup — in Germany they only have an FA Cup equivalent.

Perhaps one day Haaland’s Dream Team points total won’t be the stuff of hypothetical nonsense…
