Kate Middleton's Having a 'Moment' in the Royal Family Right Now, Royal Historian Says

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge is a popular royal but right now she’s having a “moment.” In April 2021, she talked to Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex when he returned to the U.K. for Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral. More than that, Catherine’s helping to shape the monarchy’s future.

Kate Middleton’s been British royalty for 10 years

On April 29, 2021, Catherine didn’t just celebrate a decade of marriage to her husband, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. The day also marked 10 years of her being an official member of the British royal family. On April 29, 2011, Catherine became the Duchess of Cambridge.

Marrying the oldest son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana meant that she, a commoner who met William in college — they both attended Scotland’s University of St. Andrews — would someday become queen consort. Catherine’s life changed drastically and she began spending most of her days carrying out official duties as a senior “working” royal.

Kate Middleton’s having a ‘moment’ in the royal family helping with the ‘remolding of the monarchy’

There’s a lot happening in the royal family. Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex are no longer senior royals. They gave a bombshell Oprah interview that aired in March 2021. Queen Elizabeth II doesn’t have her husband by her side anymore since Philip died at 99 in April 2021.

Many people are asking with the Sussexes now living in California and the queen’s husband dying, what does the future hold for the monarchy? Will Charles slim down the royal family? Whatever happens, royal historian and author Sarah Gristwood says it’s a crucial time in Catherine’s royal life.

“There is a repositioning going on within the monarchy, and I think this is one of the most important stages in Kate’s life as a royal,” she told Vanity Fair in April 2021. “She is doing things independently and voicing new ideas. This is Kate’s moment.”

“I’ll bet those courtiers who reputedly once sneered about ‘Waity Katy’ are the very ones bowing lowest now,” Gristwood added. “She looks like the person who’s going to have to play a big hand in the ongoing remolding of the monarchy.”

Kate Middleton can ‘glow and stand out’ while being part of a team

The Duchess of Cambridge has the unique ability to “stand out” while keeping in mind the team aspect of the royal family, historian Robert Lacey told Vanity Fair.

“Kate understands that this is about being part of a team,” he said. “She has this ability to glow and stand out without divisiveness and competition. She radiates support. There’s also a toughness and a core to Kate that is well concealed but people including the queen, recognize.”

The queen’s been known to admire Catherine for her grace when she steps out in public. As the mother of three gets only more experience under her belt, or more accurately tiara, Catherine will undoubtedly become even more confident in her role.
