It’s been four months since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor on 6 May. Within that time, the Duchess of Sussex has been on maternity leave enjoying precious moments with her newborn. Since Archie’s birth, Meghan has been spotted at a handful of royal affairs, including the Trooping the Colour event for the Queen’s birthday earlier this year, and supporting Harry at a charity polo match in July. The Duchess previously edited the September issue of British Vogue, however, she has remained on maternity leave.
Until now that is, as she returned to work today to launch her new capsule collection with high street fashion brands.
Meghan headed to John Lewis in London’s Oxford Street to show off her new clothing line which focuses on designing a working wardrobe.
The Duchess and Smart Works collaborated with British fashion brands and designers including John Lewis and Partners, Marks and Spencer, Jigsaw and Misha Nonoo.
Among the designs in the collection, Meghan has focused on picking pieces which are essential for those going for an interview or starting a job. As she arrived at the London venue, Meghan could be seen smiling and chatting.
So how is the Duchess settling back into work? Body language expert Judi James analysed Meghan’s return to work, and she told Express.co.uk the new mum is “keen” to get back to business.
Meghan’s styling and her non-verbal signals here suggest she’s keen to make a return to the public eye
Judi James, Body Language Expert
Judi said: “Meghan’s styling and her non-verbal signals here suggest she’s keen to make a return to the public eye, emphasising her traits of tactile, natural and quite low-key friendliness blended with a casually-dressed, campaign-based work ethic.
“This is Meghan stripped of all the Hollywood glam and royal formality just getting on with a job that means a lot to her in terms of her core values.
“All her body language in these poses suggest very direct communication via unsubtle tie-signs to register the fact that she’s among people she considers friends.
“Her smiles are very direct, involving the kind of knowing head-tilt of recognition that suggests she’s happy to be back at work.
“Her smiles involve more than the usual royal smiles, with some eye-narrowing and wrinkling and raised, rounded cheeks to suggest genuine happiness and enthusiasm.”
Judi continued: “She holds her hands high as she greets her hosts to act as an announcement gesture to let them know there’s a warm greeting involving a partial hug on its way and her raised brows and teeth-baring smile as she chats signal recognition and excitement.
“The only gesture that hints of any tension in this ritual of energy, excitement and enthusiasm to get back to her work is her hair-touch but this has always been a signature gesture for Meghan and could easily be caused by the strong wind as much as any underlying nerves.”
The new mum looked chic as she stepped out today, wearing pieces from the Smart Works collection.
Meghan dressed smartly for her first day back at work wearing a fitted white shirt which was tucked into her trousers. She rolled up her sleeves and left a few buttons undone in the tailored look.
Meghan matched this with a pair of mid-rise A-line black trousers which cut off at the ankle. Her look was pulled together with a £85 Ralph Lauren brown belt which had a gold buckle. The new mum matched the design with a pair of closed toe suede brown high heel Manolo Blahnik pumps, on sale for £563.
