My mum is deteriorating fast and I need to sort her finances but don’t know where to start

DEAR DEIDRE: IN the space of 18 months my mum has gone from having three jobs, and walking to all three, to not even being able to make herself a cup of tea.

She is deteriorating fast and is only 60.

She lives on her own and still has a little to pay off her mortgage but there is no way she can go back to work.

She is very confused and her coordination has completely gone. I need to get her finances in line but don’t know where to start.

She is waiting for a neurology appointment to get a diagnosis.

DEIDRE SAYS: What a worrying time for both of you. Your mum must feel very scared but it will reassure her that you are there to help her.

Contact her doctor to see if the appointment can be sped up as her condition is worsening so rapidly.

Ask her doctor to organise a social worker for her. They will coordinate all the necessary local support and should advise you too.

Please also contact Age UK Helpline (, 0800 678 1602) for further support.
