Sarah Ferguson has confessed she "murdered herself" with self-hatred following her divorce from Prince Andrew.
In her first US TV interview in more than seven years, Fergie revealed how she blamed herself for her split with the Duke of York in 1996, following ten years of marriage.
But the Duchess of York said that her and Andrew’s life together is now "the greatest ever", calling it "our fairy tale".
The writer and charity patron, who returned to the royal fold in the last 12 months, spoke kindly to Modern Hero on Saturday.
"It [the divorce] was rock bottom. I had completely and utterly destroyed myself. I murdered myself.
"I must have brought that on for myself, hadn’t I? That’s how I felt about myself, self-hatred at its height. I think that I lived in my ego for a very long time," Fergie said.
"It was seven years, 40 days a year, I saw him. It was really, really difficult."
But Sarah insisted marrying the Duke of York in 1986 was the "best thing she’s ever done".
And the mother-of-two stressed she’s now "happier than ever" after her reconciliation with the 58-year-old.
They live together at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, Berks.
She added: "Now our life together is the greatest ever.
"It’s so hard to comprehend because we’re not normal. This is our fairy tale, and we’re telling it our way."
