Coronavirus: Expert outlines dangers of supermarket shopping
Supermarket customers will see a huge change in stores across the country as well as many other high street retailers. Under the new Government legislation, stores like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Marks and Spencer and Morrisons will have to adhere to the new store layouts in order to tackle obesity.
The new rules will see some of the nation’s most popular offers like ‘buy one get one’ on certain items banned.
Other offers like “3 for 2” will also be banned in stores to help support the UK make healthier choices.
Promotions on unhealthy foods in places like checkouts and store entrances will also be stopped.
Key locations like aisle ends and their online equivalents will also stock healthier alternatives.

According to the Government, soft drink displayed at the end of an aisle, have been shown to increase sales by over 50 percent.
The restrictions apply to foods high in fat, sugar and salt like cakes, crisps, soft drinks, breakfast cereals, pizzas as well as ready meals.
From April 2022, these promotions that are deemed unhealthy will be restricted in an attempt to tackle Britain’s obesity crisis.
Small stores are exempt from the plans and can continue to offer promotions on their products.

Specialist retailers like chocolate shops are also exempt from the location restrictions.
The announcement, which was made yesterday, will affect businesses employing more than 50 people and stores larger than 2,000 square feet.
Free refills of sugary soft drinks will also be banned in restaurants.
These promotions appear to help shoppers save money but data shows that these deals actually increase purchases of promoted products by almost 20 percent.
Public Health Minister, Jo Churchill, said: “We know families want to be presented with healthier choices.
“This is why we are restricting promotions and introducing a range of measures to make sure the healthy choice is the easy choice.
“Creating an environment which helps everyone eat healthier foods more regularly is crucial to improving the health of the nation.”
In the New Year, PHE’s Better Health Campaign will also run adverts on TV and online to help people maintain a healthy weight.
The Government says that obesity is one of the biggest health crises the country faces.
Almost two thirds of adults in England are overweight and obesity-related illnesses cost the NHS £6billion a year.
The changes in supermarkets and other retailers will hopefully encourage people to make healthier choices.
According to the NHS, adults should have no more than 30g of free sugars a day, which is equivalent to around seven sugar cubes.
Free sugars are found in foods like sweets, cakes, biscuits and fizzy drinks.
For example, a can of cola can have as much as nine cubes of sugar, more than the recommended daily limit for adults.
