“Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” isn’t out yet, but the first reactions have already started hatching.
The film (in theaters Feb. 7) features Margot Robbie as the Joker’s ex-girlfriend Harley Quinn as she leads a team of female of superheroes.
According to Twitter reactions from people who got to see early screenings, fans can expect an action flick that’s hilarious, violent and massively fun.
For a taste of the on-screen mayhem, Atom Tickets film writer Alisha Grauso described the film as “like if John Wick were run through a crazy funhouse filter and stuffed full of glitter and f-bombs.”
“It’s everything you could ever want from #HarleyQuinn and her badass girl gang,” she continued. “Into this movie completely.”
Screen Queens editor Millicent Thomas called the film, which features a majority female cast and was written and directed by women, “a criminally fun celebration of sisterhood.”
Cathy Yan’s #BIRDSOFPREY is a criminally fun celebration of sisterhood, with some of my favourite fight scenes in recent memory. I was grinning from ear to ear the entire thing; making a pub debut with my review soon! pic.twitter.com/QBEgyf6oan
“I was grinning from ear to ear the entire thing,” she added.
User @keileykaiser noted one scene in particular made it clear women were calling the shots behind the scenes.
“You can tell a movie was directed and written by … women when in the middle of an action scene someone hands a hair band to their teammate,” she wrote, sharing a clip of Robbie’s Quinn taking a breather from pummeling baddies to toss a hair tie to Black Canary, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell.

Fandango managing editor Erik Davis praised the movie for “terrific action, humor & some of the more memorable characters” from DC Comics. But the “biggest highlight,” he said, was Robbie’s performance as Quinn.
“She is fantabulous as Harley, while also proving that sometimes our most valued relationships are the ones we have w/ good food,” he added.
Gamespot’s Meg Downey called the film “an absolute blast” and said Robbie’s Quinn “feels exactly like the human Looney Toon she ought to be.”
Comicbook.com producer Brandon Davis agreed “Birds of Prey” is “a lot of fun.” He also noted it’s “violent as hell.”
#BirdsOfPrey is a lot of fun and violent as hell. The Birds are so entertaining and distinctly different from each other. Ewan McGregor is so sinister and often hilarious. pic.twitter.com/4scxbS6GwT
“The Birds are so entertaining and distinctly different from each other,” he continued, adding Ewan McGregor’s turn as the villainous Black Mask “is so sinister and often hilarious.”
Inverse entertainment writer Eric Francisco said a “slow start and awkward plotting” didn’t keep him from enjoying the “killer” movie.
“Wildly violent, F bombs out the wazoo, and the best bat fight scene since The Raid 2,” he added. “If Margot Robbie could control this part of the (DC Extended Universe), she should.”
