Exeter racing ABANDONED due to freezing temperatures as it joins Cheltenham in cancelling New Year's Day action

EXETER'S racing for today has been abandoned – as it joins Cheltenham on the cancelled list.

Both meets have been forced to give up their big New Year's Day meets.

Cheltenham, the home of jumps racing, announced two days ago that their showpiece event would not be taking place.

Exeter held a track inspection this morning but the freezing temperatures have forced it to be cancelled.

It was -2C at the Devon track at 6.40am and temperatures are not set to peak until mid-afternoon.

Even then it will only reach 2C.

However there was good news for Musselburgh as officials confirmed today's racing will go ahead.

Daniel Cooper, clerk of Exeter course, said: "

It's extremely frustrating but we've been left with no choice but to cancel.

"We were quite optimistic at 6am as all the areas under frost covers were one hundred per cent raceable, but the uncovered areas have not improved during the morning and temperatures have actually dropped in the back straight.

"The BHA course inspector said we needed to see improvement within 45 minutes after our 9.30am check, but there was no improvements in half an hour so we made an early call."

Temperatures at Musselburgh in Scotland did not go below 4C and just 1mm of rain fell overnight.

ITV will show three contests from the six-race card, while Tramore in Ireland will feature the Savills New Year's Day Chase.

Double Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo makes his big return to the track.

Southwell will also host flat racing on its fibresand surface.
