India cricket legend Sourav Ganguly, 48, suffers suspected heart attack and is taken to hospital for emergency operation

INDIAN cricket legend Sourav Ganguly has been rushed to hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack, according to reports.

Ganguly, 48, is said to have complained of chest pains and was taken to hospital in Kolkata.

Reports in India claim the former batsman suffered a 'mild cardiac arrest' after complaining of dizziness after a workout at the gym.

The ex-India captain is said to currently be in stable condition but will need to undergo surgery.

It's believed Ganguly will have a procedure called an angioplasty – used to widen narrowed or obstructed arteries or veins – later on Saturday.

A source told ANI: "(Sourav) complained of chest pain and was rushed to the hospital.

"He might need to undergo angioplasty [but] he is out of danger."

Ganguly – affectionately known as 'Dada' – starred for India for 16 years, between 1992 and 2008 before retiring.

The left-handed batsman is regarded as one of his nation's best ever captains, both in Test and ODI formats.

Ganguly skippered India between 2000 and 2005, losing just 13 of his 49 Tests in charge, while winning 76 ODIs as captain.

Throughout his illustrious career, Ganguly played 113 Test matches, averaging 42.17 with the bat, including 16 centuries and 35 50s, with a high score of 239.

He also averaged 41.02 in 311 ODIs, hitting a sensational 22 tons and 72 half-centuries, including a top knock of 183.

Also a handy bowler, Ganguly picked up 32 Test wickets and 100 ODI wickets.

He retired from all cricket in 2012 following a spell with now-defunct IPL side Pune Warriors India.

The legendary batsman also played for Lancashire, Glamorgan and Northamptonshire in the County Championship during his career.

Ganguly has been president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since October 2019.

He was initially handed the role on a nine-month basis.

But due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ganguly – who has been working hard to get cricket played in India again – has been kept on indefinitely.

India legend and a former team-mate of Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, took to Twitter to send his old friend his best.

Sehwag wrote: "Praying for your quick and speedy recovery."

Superstar Virat Kohli added: "Praying for your speedy recovery. Get well soon"

Current India opener Shikhar Dhawan tweeted: "Praying for your speedy recovery Dada @SGanguly99. Get well soon."
