SIR FRANK WILLIAMS marked his 50th anniversary of become a team principal in style – by joining Lewis Hamilton for a hot lap of Silverstone.
Williams has become one of the iconic figures in motor sport history following a career which has seen him drive, build and run racing teams.
So Formula One bosses decided to give him the perfect gift to mark his half-century – the chance to be taken for a high-speed spin with the defending world champion.
Hamilton jumped behind the wheel as the 77-year-old was strapped him – who then told him to go for it full pelt.
And the five-time champion duly delivered as he powered a Mercedes AMG GT R around the Northamptonshire circuit – which signed a deal to host the British Grand Prix for another five years this week.
Williams marvelled at the power of the breaks as Hamilton cut loose on his hot lap, pushing his car to the limit and sending his passenger lurching alongside him.
The pair enjoyed themselves so much that when they came into the home straight and were being ushered in by stewards, they decided to ignore them and go out for a second circuit.
Hamilton then treated his VIP guest to some drifting, allowing the car to slide round the corners at high speed – much to the delight of Williams.
And to finish the trick he pulled of a series of donuts, spinning the car around on the spot – prompting Williams to say: "You're a hooligan."
Williams was left beaming as they pulled into the pits and said: "That was enjoyable, very enjoyable.
"Quite unforgettable, I must say. Quite unforgettable Lewis – something that will live on in my brain for a long time to come Lewis. You're a star."
Hamilton replied: "I will always remember that, just thank you so much for going with me. I appreciate you."
