Newcastle next manager – Frank Lampard favourite as bookies SLASH odds on ex-Chelsea boss, Conte & Favre in the mix

FRANK LAMPARD leads the race to replace Steve Bruce as Newcastle manager.

That's according to bookmakers Sky Bet, who've significantly altered their odds after an intense 24-hour period in the betting market.

The former Derby and Chelsea manager had previously trailed Leicester's Brendan Rodgers, who was the 11/8 favourite.

But Lampard now occupies that position having shortened from 4/1 to 5/2 overnight.

Lampard is still a free agent having been sacked by Chelsea in January after 18 months in charge.

The 43-year-old left having guided the club to a fourth-placed finish and the FA Cup final during his first season in charge.

Lampard did not sign a single player during his debut campaign with Chelsea still operating under a transfer embargo.

He did, however, show his prowess in the transfer market by later spending more than £200m on seven major signings, including Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz.

Former Borussia Dortmund coach Lucien Favre is second in the market at 5/1.

Antonio Conte and Roberto Martinez are locked together at 7s with Rangers boss Steven Gerrard in close order at 9/1.

Previous favourite Rodgers has drifted to 10/1, narrowly ahead of assistant manager Graeme Jones (10/1) and Ralf Rangnick (14/1).

It looks a matter of WHEN and not IF a managerial change will be made at St James' Park following their £305million takeover.

A huge re-structuring of the club is on the horizon and Bruce could well be the first casualty.

He's priced at 1/16 to be the next Premier League manager sacked after showdown talks with the club's new owners earlier this week.

Director Amanda Staveley is reportedly awaiting the 'green light' from the club's new Saudi owners to relieve Bruce of his duties.

The Times claim 'conference calls' have taken place to discuss the departure ahead of Sunday's clash with Tottenham.
