Michael van Gerwen meets the fiery Gerwyn Price as Premier League Darts heads to Nottingham on Thursday, live on Sky Sports at 7pm.
Nathan Aspinall vs Michael Smith
Aspinall steps in for Gary Anderson as arguably one of the main dangermen among the contingent of ‘contenders’.
He burst onto the scene with a run to the World Darts Championship semi-final and, last weekend, won the UK Open.
But Smith might be the man to have Aspinall’s number. He eliminated Aspinall in the final four of the Worlds and has a superior 4-1 head-to-head record.
Only Raymond van Barneveld is below Smith in the table so he needs a win.
James Wade vs Mensur Suljovic
Who expected Wade to be topping the table at this point? His rejuvenation has been one of the stories of the Premier League campaign so far.
He thrashed Daryl Gurney 7-0 last week, and beat Michael van Gerwen the week before.
But perhaps surprisingly Suljovic has an 8-5 head-to-head record which includes wins at the World Grand Prix and the World Matchplay. They have never met on this stage.
Rob Cross vs Raymond van Barneveld
Van Barneveld is in danger of being cut adrift at the bottom of the Premier League – he has not won in five attempts, and is the only player without a win.
His latest attempt to kickstart his campaign is against Cross, who is one of four players on seven points. Cross will see this as the perfect opportunity to end the night on top of the table.
In five previous meetings from 2017 onwards, Van Barneveld has never beaten Cross. They met twice in last year’s Premier League resulting in a Cross victory and a draw.
Gerwyn Price vs Michael van Gerwen
Van Gerwen has won all 13 of his career matches against Price, a remarkable run that has featured meetings in the Premier League, World Championship and the World Cup of Darts.
But Van Gerwen is winless in his past two Premier League outings after a loss to Wade and a draw with John Henderson. Colin Lloyd told Sky Sports that Van Gerwen needed a rest after a hectic period of action.
So maybe this is Price’s big chance? He has the same amount of points as Van Gerwen after five weeks and is arguably on top of his game.
Peter Wright vs Daryl Gurney
Neither of these players have been able to kickstart their seasons yet so will see each other as vulnerable targets.
Two Premier League meetings last season both resulted in draws but Wright and Gurney will be desperate to take maximum points as they work towards the play-off positions.
