Laura, 39, was on hand to help Teresa find her very own holiday home in the Algarve of Portugal during the repeat episode of A Place in the Sun. The property expert didn’t waste any time in getting to know exactly what the guest of the Channel 4 show wanted from the property she was going to buy. Criteria included the property having two bedrooms, near to the beach and somewhere suitable to cook, all within a budget of £110,000. However, when she found exactly what she was looking for, the house hunter was astonished by the discount the real estate agents were willing to give her.

The search started with property number one, which was on the market for £117,000 and was located within a 50-apartment compound.

It was a third-floor apartment with glimpses of the sea seen from the windows and it featured an open plan interior.

This was something Teresa didn’t enjoy and the fact it only contained one double bedroom was another disadvantage of the property.

Speaking with the host, the guest stated she wanted it to be somewhere she could “call home” instead of just being a holiday home.

With this in mind, the presenter moved onto property number two after a “disappointing” start to the search.

On the market for £112,00, it was a little over Teresa’s budget but Laura said the agents would be willing to negotiate on the price.

The traditional, Portuguese apartment had two balconies and was modernised throughout, with three bedrooms completing the set-up.

Teresa admitted she had a “tingly feeling” about it, although there were some things that were more of a disadvantage.

Looking around the kitchen, the guest released there wasn’t enough room and the middle bedroom didn’t have any windows.

By the end of the viewing, the guest said it was definitely a contender but the presenter had more cards up her sleeve.

Can see you’re a little bit emotional

Moving onto property number three, Laura showed Teresa somewhere which was spacious and in a townhouse style.

At just over £121,000, it was way over the guest’s budget but again, the presenter explained some negotiating could be done.

A whole £10,000 could be knocked off and this impressed the house hunter but once inside, she discovered she would have to make some alterations.

This was therefore ruled out of the running as the guest explained she didn’t have the money to do the renovations needed.

Quickly moving onto property number four, the host of the show thought she had found somewhere a bit more inclined to Teresa’s way of thinking.

Fully furnished and with the decor brand-new as no one had lived in it before, this was a stand-out property for Teresa.

It was just a short walk away from the beach and contained a brick patio suitable for al fresco dining.

The guest was tightly impressed as she told Laura it was ready to move into and would not need to be changed.

Therefore, it became another contender but the property expert had one more home to show the house hunter.

As soon as Teresa stepped inside property number five, she said she had always dreamt of living in a place such as this in Portugal.

It was located close to the beach and situated in the middle of a Portuguese village, which blew the guest away.

On the market for £117,000, it was still a little over the guest’s budget but Laura again said a lower offer could be accepted.

As well as having everything the other houses had, this one was a 200-year-old cottage with a solarium on the roof and a plunge pool.

With three bedrooms, the guest couldn’t see herself living anywhere else and it wasn’t long before she asked to put in an offer.

Knowing she needed to play smart, Teresa went in with £105,000 and Laura rang the agents to see what their decision was.

Unfortunately, this was rejected but they said they would be willing to accept a sum of £106,500 for the property.”

Teresa was clearly emotional as Laura made the call to her colleague and within seconds, the property was hers.

This meant she had received a discount of more than £10,500 from the asking price and it was still within her budget constraints.

Laura was baffled as after she congratulated the new homeowner, she could see the guest was beginning to cry.

“Obviously I can see you’re a little bit emotional,” the presenter said, to which Teresa replied: “I was nervous today.

“About the whole thing and it’s still a big step, even though it’s what I want, it is still a big step and I’m doing it on my own.”

A Place in the Sun airs weekdays at 3pm on Channel 4.
