Britain’s Got Talent has been hit with over 2,000 Ofcom complaints following Saturday’s final, most of which have been directly aimed at Nabil Abdulrashid’s Black Lives Matter-inspired performance.
Yep, people really do have too much free time.
During his routine, the comedian poked fun at the complaints he had previously received following his semi-finalist act, which pushed boundaries in terms of race and religion.
‘I am glad we are here, I thought we wouldn’t make it,’ Nabil began by saying. ‘A lot of complaints, they complained because we said, Black Lives Matter.
‘Thousands of complaints. To be honest with you, I’m shocked that many of them know how to write. They sent thousands of angry letters, hopefully, if I annoy them today, they can progress on to words.’
He continued: ‘They wrote complaints about me, that’s what upsets me. What have I said to offend anybody? You think I came out here and said something really inflammatory like Winston Churchill was black – by the way, he was. I can prove it. When was the last time you saw a white man named Winston?’
After being praised by the judges, Ashley Banjo couldn’t help but address the Ofcom complaints Diversity received for their Black Lives Matter routine earlier in the series.
‘I know what it’s like to get a few complaints,’ he laughed.
‘There are two ways you can react, you can bend to pressure or you can be unapologetically yourself. It’s not even about being black it’s about being unapologetically you.’
Following from Saturday’s finale, an Ofcom spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘We have received 2094 complaints about this programme, most of which relate to Nabil Abdulrashid’s performance.’
Although this year’s Britain’s Got Talent series was won by fellow comedian Jon Courtenay, Nabil has promised that this is only the beginning and there’s much more on the way.
After the episode, he penned: ‘Thanks for all the support guys. Didn’t get the “W” today but don’t worry.. the marathon continues.
‘Love you all #teamnabil #nabilarmy I came to make a point and I think I did.’
Britain’s Got Talent is available to stream on the ITV Hub.
