Corrie newcomer Tony Maudsley teases love triangle for George Shuttleworth

Coronation Street newcomer Tony Maudsley has teased a love triangle is on the cards for Weatherfield’s latest addition George Shuttleworth.

Benidorm actor Tony has been cast as George, who is the son of Archie Shuttleworth, on the ITV soap, and it sounds like his arrival catches the eye of both Eileen Grimshaw (played by Sue Cleaver) and Mary Taylor (Patti Clare).

Appearing on ITV’s Lorraine on Wednesday, Tony teased that a slew of potential romances could be tough on his onscreen alter ego.

‘The thing is about George, he’s a nice, amicable guy and he doesn’t want to hurt anybody,’ the star said.

And hinting that there could be as many as three women with a soft spot for George, Tony added: ‘Little did I know, there’s another name in the mix and there’s going to be three women chasing him by the sounds of it.’

It’s been hinted that George could strike up a relationship with unlucky in love Eileen, with Tony hinting that she’s in need of a decent bloke who has a ‘twinkle in his eye’ like George.

‘She needs someone to spoil her, who’s going to come round with a soft centre. The thing about George is i know that he’s not a murderer, so she’s safe on that front,’ Tony joked.

‘He does work as an undertaker anything can happen so, but at the moment he’s a really nice, charing guy with a twinkle in his eye.’

George’s character is the son of Archie, who was played by actor Roy Hudd, who sadly passed away in March earlier this year.

Proud to be carrying on Roy’s name in the soap, Tony touched on the late star and said: ‘I’m very proud, he’s such a lovely man, it’s a shame we’ll never get to do any scenes together.’

He described his new role on Corrie as a ‘dream come true’ and revealed he still feels like the ‘new boy’ on set as coronavirus filming restrictions have meant he still hasn’t met all of the cast.

‘It was strange, I thought it would be very nerve-wracking,’ he said of his first day on set. ‘But, it’s slowed down, it’s all very diluted and a lot of the actors I haven’t met yet and I’ve been there two months.’

He did, however, praise his co-star Patti, who he filmed some of his very first scenes with, and said she made him feel ‘very welcome’.

Coronation Street continues on Wednesday at 7.30pm on ITV.
