Netflix’s hit sci-fi series Dark reached its conclusion in June 2020 with the third and final outing. The series rounded off the story, but some plot points remained a mystery after the credits rolled. One character who viewers are curious about is Silja (played by Lea van Acken).

How did Silja get her scar in Dark?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from all seasons of Dark

Season one’s final scene introduced the enigmatic figure of Silja – however, at this point her name remained unknown.

Silja was the young woman who knocked out Jonas Kahnwald (Louis Hofmann) with the butt of a rifle only moments after the teen arrived in the future.

Why she decided to do this remained unclear, but it emerged Jonas was at odds with her and the rest of Sic Mundus.

In season two, Silja was revealed to be working as an interpreter for Elisabeth Doppler (Sandra Borgman) and was a firm believer in Sic Mundus.

However, her faith was shaken after Elisabeth chose not to execute Jonas for going into the forbidden zone of the Winden Power Plant.

Silja later discovered the God Particle lived inside the powerplant and could be used to travel through time hence why it was prohibited.

Finally, season three revealed all about Silja, who was the daughter of Hannah Kahnwald (Maja Schöne) and Egon Tiedemann (Sebastian Hülk).

Hannah had an affair with Egon in the 1950s and Silja was the product of their union.

She had originally planned to terminate the child but decided against it and kept her daughter.

From a young age, Silja was shown to have a scar on her face and it wasn’t obvious how she had got.

The scar may have either been a birthmark or something resulting from an accident.

Either way, fans remained in the dark about why she had this distinctive marking on her face.

Perhaps one explanation could be, the scar was to subtly signpost to the audience Silja was an important character.

She certainly made an entrance and it was hard to forget her thanks to the scar and the fact she knocked out Jonas.

The makers of Dark have continually used small visual details to try and create cohesion between different versions of the same characters in the different time periods.

For instance, Claudia Tiedemann (Julika Jenkins) had heterochromia, while Helge Doppler (Peter Schneider) had a badly damaged ear and the Unknown (Jakob Diehl) had a scar from cleft lip palate surgery.

Similarly, Silja’s scar may have been to mark her out across the different time periods and show the audience it was supposed to be the same character.

Silja was an important character who travelled back in time after getting orders from Adam (Dietrich Hollinderbäumer) to do so.

When she arrived, Silja fell in love with Bartosz Tiedemann (Paul Lux) and they had two children Hanno/Noah (Mark Waschke) and Agnes Nielsen (Antje Traue).

Speaking to Indiewire back in 2019 about casting on Dark, co-creator Jantje Friese said: “We have three age groups, and once you find one, then everything needs to relate to that person.

“When you see them in life and flesh, they don’t look that much alike. So it’s really that in going through the makeup process and trying to find out what you do with the hair and face.

“Old Ines [Angela Winkler] in actual life has a mole, so you put that on younger Ines when you tried to make them match.”

She also spoke to the difficulties of casting, saying: “Honestly, the most difficult people to find were women [older than middle age].

“When women turn 40, their career dies down unfortunately. And the older they get, it gets worse.”

Friese added: “We thought that was would be easier. That was actually very difficult to have a big enough pool of women to choose from, which I thought was quite sad.”
