EastEnders star Shona McGarty opens up about splitting from fiancé

EastEnders actress Shona McGarty has opened up about ending her relationship with fiancé Ryan Harris and has insisted ‘it wasn’t a bad break up’.

The star, who plays no-nonsense Whitney Dean in the BBC One soap, had been dating Ryan for five years before announcing her engagement in 2018. However, the couple went their separate ways months later, with Shona announcing she’d split from Ryan in January,

‘We were together for six years,’ Shona recalled. ‘When it ended it wasn’t a bad break-up, it was amicable. We both came to the decision that, actually, this isn’t what we really want. It fizzled out and we weren’t the same people.’

She continued to The Sun’s Fabulous Magazine: I’ve learned that I’m alright, I’m happy by myself and I don’t need a man. I was never one of those little girls who had a box full of wedding ideas. I had an Action Man and I wanted to go out on my bike, and climb trees.

‘I’m enjoying getting to know myself. I’m just being me and not caring about what people think about me anymore.’

Shona’s EastEnders character Whitney has been involved in a huge storyline in recent weeks and her ordeal is far from over.

Whitney had been living in fear over Leo King’s (Tom Wells) obsession with her, and that’s finally all come to a head in Walford, when she killed Leo in self-defense when he attacked her with a knife.

The barmaid has since been arrested for killing the deranged paralegal, which has left audiences questioning whether she’ll end up being sentenced to prison and leaving the soap.

So far, there’s been no word as to whether Shona will be leaving Albert Square, so fingers crossed it stays that way.

EastEnders continues on Monday at 8pm on BBC One.
