Five years ago, Come Dine With Me blessed the nation with one of the most iconic moments ever to be aired on TV.
It was a typical Monday evening. The final dinner party host of the episode, Peter, was tasked with announcing who had won the £1,000 prize out of him and his competitors Charlotte, Jane and Adam.
As Peter unfurled the scroll, a shocked expression dawned on his face as he discovered that he had landed in last place.
While Charlotte, Jane and Adam reacted with (feigned) surprise to his loss, he stared daggers back at them, before shaking his head directly at Jane as she sat on the end of the sofa.
‘Why are you shaking your head at me?’ Jane asked with bemusement.
‘You won Jane,’ Peter furiously replied.
It was at this point that Peter delivered a speech worthy of Shakespeare, one that people across the UK will forever be able to recite word for word.
‘Enjoy the money, I hope it makes you very happy. Dear lord, what a sad little life Jane,’ Peter said.
‘You ruined my night completely so you could have the money, but I hope now you spend it on getting some lessons in grace and decorum.
‘Because you have all the grace of a reversing dump truck without any tyres on.’
It’s still so cringeworthy, even after all this time.
As Jane giggled nervously, Charlotte turned to her and said: ‘I don’t get it.’
Delivering yet another zinger, Peter responded: ‘Well you wouldn’t, let’s be honest, there’s nobody in there love.’
As Jane, Charlotte and Adam bowed their heads in embarrassment over Peter’s outburst, he concluded: ‘So Jane, take your money and get off my property.’
But his tantrum wasn’t enough to dampen his guests’ spirits, as Charlotte congratulated Jane over her win and gave her a hug.
While one should never aspire to be as sore a loser as Peter, we must thank him for the sheer amount of amusement he has given us since appearing on Come Dine With Me five years ago.
We have no doubt that in another five years’ time, we’ll be right back here, reminiscing on the impact ‘What a sad little life Jane’ has had on the past decade.
Absolute TV gold.
Come Dine With Me is available to watch on All 4 and Netflix.
