Greys Anatomy stars now – divorce U-turn, Emmy snub and Denzel Washington row

Grey’s Anatomy is the hit US medical drama that made household names out of the likes of Sandra Oh and Katherine Heigl and seemed to run…forever.

It premiered in 2005 and follows the careers of various medics at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle and is ABC’s longest-running scripted primetime show currently on air.

The show’s title is of course a nod to Gray's Anatomy, the human anatomy textbook published in 1858 in London and written by Henry Gray, and is now in its 18th season and shows no sign of stopping.

Grey’s has been described as a “phenomenon” and has won countless awards. You’ll definitely recognise some of the cast from movies – so where are they now and what have they been up to?

Ellen Pompeo

Ellen is arguably the biggest star of Grey’s and is one of the highest-paid TV actresses ever. She is also a producer on the show.

Ellen, 51, plays the titular Dr Meredith Grey, the narrator and main, strong female lead. She started out in Law & Order and in 2002 was cast as the lead in Moonlight Mile, opposite Jake Gyllenhaal.

By 2005 she was cast in Grey’s Anatomy and hasn’t looked back since. She still stars in the show and has previously said that "creatively, as long as there's something to do" she is happy to stay though she joked to Good Morning America she “has been trying to leave for years”.

She recently admitted that she clashed with acting legend Denzel Washington on the set of Grey's when he directed an episode, which was revealed to Ellen as a surprise.

However, it quickly turned sour when Denzel told her off for going off script, telling her: "‘I’m the director. Don’t you tell him what to do."

Ellen revealed she responded: "And I was like, ‘Listen, motherf***er, this is my show. This is my set. Who are you telling?' Like, 'You barely know where the bathroom is.'"

She added: "And I have the utmost respect for him as an actor, as a director, as everything, but, like, yo, we went at it one day."

Patrick Dempsey

Silver fox Patrick plays neurosurgeon Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd in the show, husband to Meredith. Spoiler alert: he was killed off in series seven, though.

Patrick is also a racing car driver and started out as a heartthrob in Nineties hits such as Scream 3, Outbreak and Loverboy.

He has competed in various racing events such as 24 Hours of Le Mans. Like many actors who found huge success in a long-running TV show, Patrick, 55, wanted to “develop and do something else”.

No one will forget him as the hunky love interest in 2016’s Bridget Jones’ Baby and in 2020 he signed on to star as the lead of a CBS political drama pilot, Ways & Means.

The face of both L’oreal and Versace, Patrick is married to Jillian Fink and they have three children. Jillian filed for divorce in 2015 but the pair later reconciled the following year and she called it off.

Sandra Oh

Sandra Oh is best known for starring as Cristina Yang, a cardiothoracic surgical fellow in the show and her friendship with Meredith is described as the “secret core” of the series.

Originally from Canada, Sandra is the daughter of South Korean immigrants and has said she is the only person in her high-achieving family that “does not have a Master’s degree in something”.

Her career began in Canadian films and by 2005, the 50-year-old had been cast in Grey’s. Her impact on the entertainment industry has been significant. Sandra was the first Asian person to host the Golden Globes in 2019 and the third Asian actress to host SNL, after Lucy Liu and Awkwafina.

BBC’s Killing Eve was another major breakthrough for her and a welcome change from playing the “lead’s best friend”. She also voices the role of Debbie Grayson in the animated superhero drama series Invincible.

Katherine Heigl

Katherine played the role of Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy from 2005 till 2010, for which she received numerous prizes, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Grey’s was her highest-profile role and essentially her breakthrough. From there Katherine, 44, went on to become a bit of a rom-com queen, starring in Knocked Up and 27 Dresses.

However, following her controversial exit from the hit show, she soon fell out of favour with Hollywood after speaking out against some of her film roles.

She also sparked controversy when she decided to step out of the race for the 2008 Emmy Awards, saying: "I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and, in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention."

Her comments sparked outrage amongst many as they took her comments to be a dig at the quality of Grey's, and Katherine later said: "I could have more gracefully said that without going into a private work matter.

"It was between me and the writers. I ambushed them, and it wasn’t very nice or fair."

She is married to singer Josh Kelly and they have two adopted daughters.

Justin Chambers

Justin plays Dr Alex Karev, a role that brought him widespread recognition. He was scouted by a model agent as a young man on the Metro in New York and started out as a Calvin Klein model. After campaigns for Dolce & Gabbana and Armani Justin decided to try his hand at acting and landed roles in various American soaps such as Another World.

In 2004 his big break came and he stayed with Grey’s until 2020 – his final episode aired on November 14 2019 with a farewell episode airing on March 5 2020.

Justin, a dad of five, has said that he wants to “diversify” after living in the Grey’s “bubble”.

He told Hollywood Life: “You wear scrubs every day, you see pretty much the same people every day, in the same four walls, the same studios, you drive the same route to work.

“For me, it was sort of a factory job for acting. You just clock in, clock out.”
