Netflix has announced they will be delving into the life of Formula one’s record-breaking racer, with the release of a new documentary, Schumacher. Ahead of its release, the trailer showed snippets of in-depth interviews with his wife and other family members, as they detail his recovery from his traumatic head injury.

Michael Schumacher dominated the sport of formula one racing for 17 years until his retirement in 2013.

With a bright future ahead of him, Michael suffered a tragic accident while on a skiing holiday with his family in France.

Despite wearing a helmet, he had life-changing injuries when he fell and hit his head on a rock.

After he was rushed to hospital, doctors were forced to place him in a medically induced coma and when they tried to bring him back, he never regained full consciousness.

After six months in the coma, the world champion was moved to a hospital in Switzerland before he was allowed to be transferred home.

Since his accident, the Schumacher family have kept Michael away from the limelight and he has not been seen in public.

For the first time since the incident, his loved ones have opened their doors to cameras and provided insight into his health.

The trailer featured emotional interviews from his children, colleagues and wife of 26 years Corinna.

She gave an emotional update on the champion and shared: “I miss Michael every day. But Michael is here – different, but here. He still shows me how strong he is every day.”

Corinna explained: “We are trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable.

“We are getting on with our lives, ‘private is private’ as he always said. It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible.”

“Michael always protected us, now we are protecting Michael,” she concluded.

Elsewhere, Corinna opened up about the early beginnings of their relationship and said: “First of all, I think I’m incredibly fortunate to have met Michael.”

She recalled: “He’s simply the most lovable person I’ve ever met. I once made dinner for him on his birthday. He was the only one who helped me to clear up and do the dishes.

“And I thought, ‘That’s a proper bloke’ and yes, he was really funny, and that’s what I saw in him.”

Corinna revealed: “I fell in love with him simply because he was a wonderful person. I just sensed that he was something special to me. I never once thought, ‘He’s a terrific racing driver at the start of a dazzling career.’ No one could have guessed that would happen.”

Since Michael’s retirement, Lewis Hamilton has taken over as his successor.

He’s held the record for the most F1 Grand Prix race victories, standing at a whopping 91.

His son Mick Schumacher, has also followed in his father’s footsteps and become a German racing driver and become a success.

The 22-year-old progressed to Formula 2 in 2019 and won the 2020 Formula 2 Championship.

Schumacher will be released on Wednesday, September 15 on Netflix.
