Heartbreaking meaning behind Maya Jama's rarely seen tattoo tribute to her ex

MAYA Jama's rarely-seen tattoo tribute to her ex was on full display last night, as she wore a daring backless dress at an awards ceremony.

The TV and radio presenter donned the red ball gown, which featured a cut-out back, for The Fashion Awards 2021 at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Maya, 27, wowed fans in the plunging dress, which showed off her assets – as well as her rarely-seen tattoo on the right side of her back.

The ink is a tribute to her childhood sweetheart who was tragically gunned down in an attack when she was just 16 years old.

Radio 1 star Maya was instrumental in catching the sick gangsters who shot her then-boyfriend Rico Gordon, then 21, in cold blood.

He was caught in the crossfire of a deadly gunfight between two rival thugs in London while he spoke to Maya on the phone.

In his memory, Maya had her former boyfriend's initials tattooed on her body forever – with the 'RG' seen in cursive text just under her ribcage.

Speaking about Rico's tragic death in 2011, Maya said: ''That's the worst thing that's ever happened to me. It was unreal – the sort of thing that happens in films.

"The experience gave me so much motivation to push with my career. At the time, work was the only thing that made me happy, so I just kept on going with it."

She added: "Bad things happen, but you've got to try to make good things out of that tough situation. That's what it taught me."

Maya was instrumental in the catching and sentencing of the two killer's months later after she appeared on Crimewatch to appeal for information.

Shakah Anderson, 34, of no fixed address, and Rickel Adams, 30, of Neasden, north London, were found guilty of his murder following a trial.

Maya joined a number of famous faces at The Fashion Awards 2021 last night, including Kris Jenner, Nick Jonas, James McAvoy, Dua Lipa and Rochelle Humes.

This year's awards held at Royal Albert Hall were hosted by Emmy-winner Billy Porter who did not disappoint on the red carpet.

Actor Idris Elba also paid tribute to Louis Vuitton and Off-White designer Virgil Abloh who tragically died from cancer on Sunday.

The death was confirmed in a post on his Instagram account.
