Whether you’ve been a fan of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books for years or discovered them through the hit Starz TV series they inspired, chances are you can’t get enough of the adventures of time-traveling Claire and her Scottish husband Jamie Fraser. And thankfully, there’s no danger of the show outpacing the books (unlike Game of Thrones). Season 4, which premiered in November 2018, covers events from Drums of Autumn, the fourth novel in the eight-book series. That means there could be another four seasons of Outlander just based on the existing novels, assuming Starz doesn’t cancel the show.
But if you’re keeping up with the books in addition to the TV show, you’re probably a bit impatient. The last Outlander novel, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, came out in 2014. That means book readers have been waiting four long years to find out what’s next for Claire and Jamie.
Diana Gabaldon’s next book might be out in 2019
Gabaldon has already announced the title of the next book in the Outlander series: Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone. On her website, she said she hoped to have the book finished by 2018. While no release date has been set yet, there’s a good chance that the book will come out sometime in 2019, at least according to fansites.
Gabaldon has said that it takes her three to four years to write each of her lengthy novels. That means she’s right on schedule for book nine, even though she’s admitted that all the additional travel she’d done because of the interest in the show has cut down on her productivity.

The Outlander series will end with book 10

Now for the bad news. While fans would likely be happy to follow Claire and Jamie’s romantic adventures forever, Gabaldon has said she plans to end the series after book 10.
During a Q&A at EW PopFest in 2016, a fan asked about a scene in the very first Outlander episode, when Jamie sees Claire in 1940s Scotland. How Jamie (who’s spent the entire series so far in the 1700s) got to the 20th century hasn’t been explained, but Gabaldon said that fans would finally get an answer in the last book.
“It’ll be the very last thing in the last book, which I think is probably book 10,” she said.
While we don’t know exactly when the next Outlander books will come out, there is one thing that’s for sure. Contrary to rumors, Gabaldon has no plans to kill off her beloved main characters.
“It’ll likely be another five years before I get anywhere near the end of Book Ten (and for the record, I _don’t_ intend to kill Jamie and Claire off. If one of them happens to die on me, that’s another issue, but no expectation of that happening at the moment),” the author wrote in a Facebook post addressing the rumor.
As for the show, the Season 4 finale will air on Starz on January 27, 2019. And Season 5 and Season 6 are in the works. The network confirmed earlier this year that it’s renewed the show for two more seasons.
