Kate Garraway has been 'so strong' but it's hard on her kids' as their dad fights coronavirus, says Lorraine Kelly

KATE Garraway's ITV co-star Lorraine Kelly says she often thinks about the mum-of-two and praised her for being "strong" amid her husband Derek Draper's health battle.

Kate, 53, returned to work on Good Morning Britain earlier this month and admitted she and the kids are going through a "tough" time as Derek, 52, battles with his recovery from the devastating virus.

Derek has overcome the virus and doctors have told Kate his condition is "stable," but that his body has taken a huge hit.

Speaking about her friend and colleague's circumstances Lorraine, 60, said Kate is never far from her mind.

She told Good Housekeeping magazine: "My friend and colleague Kate Garraway has been so strong.

"She pops into my head an awful lot. Her situation is so hard on her and her kids."

She admitted seeing Kate's suffering has brought the virus closer to home and revealed her own fears of passing Covid-19 on to her mum and dad in Scotland.

“I think anybody who has been affected directly by coronavirus, whether they have lost someone or had it themselves, is really aware of the dangers.

“Behind all the statistics are real people who have suffered.

"When we first went into lockdown, I had real anxiety and felt quite overwhelmed by it all. Back then, the news channels were on constantly, I was always looking at social media, and it was too much. So I now take a little bit of time out," she added.

She said her beloved dog Angus has been a huge distraction and good for her mental health, calling him her "stress-buster".

"The main thing that makes it better for me is taking Angus for a walk. He's such a stress-buster."

"He comes into the room every morning before I get up, around 5am, and he sits on my bed and it just makes me feel better."

Lorraine's show was merged with Good Morning Britain during the pandemic and she said she was grateful to be working during the chaos.

She said: "It's given me some purpose… It's been lovely to receive feedback from viewers saying that it's actually quite reassuring to see me every day, too."

Kate updated viewers on Derek's progress on Tuesday. Emotional Kate revealed her husband is "stable" but his condition has not improved in recent weeks.

However, doctors had assured her Derek's condition had not worsened, adding: "They said sometimes a day when nothing has gone backwards, and nothing has gone wrong is a positive day."
