Thursday’s NTAs began with a comedy sketch of several ITV stars trying to find a music act that could open the ceremony. Host Joel Dommett jokingly rang presenters including Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield to find someone before Strictly Come Dancing star HRVY opened the show with a lively performance. However, ITV viewers were baffled when the singer was joined by Janette Manrara and The Masked Dancer characters.

One tweeted: “Turned on the #NTAs to see a boy who didn’t bother to dress properly singing a song that samples a better song. Turned off again.”

They weren’t joking when they said they couldn’t find an opening act for the #NTAs,” another wrote.

A third said: “You know you’re old when you turn on the #NTAs and you just go ‘who?’ The whole time…”

“Was expecting an A list celeb to open after that intro but we have some boy called HRVY… I’m sure the kids know who he is… #NTAs #Disappointing,” someone else shared.

Opening song at #NTAs looks like a fever dream I had once,” a fifth added.

However, others disagreed: “Omg seeing Harvey and Janet being back together is so wholesome with The Masked Dancer dancing was just amazing. I’m so proud of him #NTAs.”

“Enjoyed HRVY’s performance, good start…#NTAs,” another said.
