The former Good Morning Britain host presenter Piers Morgan received a nomination for the Best Presenter award at the 2021 National Television Awards, despite storming out of his job in March. During the live show, audience members booed him as his nomination was readout.
The National Television Awards is a prominent ceremony celebrating the talent from the UK and it’s often labelled ‘television’s biggest night of the year.’
The 2021 instalment took place in London and was aired live on tv on Thursday night.
What is usually a night filled with joy and excitement had a rare moment of displeasure, which came at the expense of Piers Morgan.
It happened when First Dates’ Fred Sirieix and his Olympian daughter Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix took to the stage to announce the nominees for The Best Presenter.
As they read Piers Morgan the audience of disgruntled crowd members booed as his nomination appeared on stage.
He was up against Alison Hammond and Holly Willoughby from This Morning, The Chase’s Bradley Walsh and I’m a Celebrity duo Ant and Dec.
Despite receiving the nomination, he took to Twitter to confirm that he wouldn’t be in attendance, by posting a snap of his feet up in front of the TV.
Which was captioned: “got a cracking seat” with the NTA hashtag.
Just as well, because the award went to the dynamic duo Ant and Dec who have won for the 20th time in a row.
As they gave their speech, they both appeared to be taken aback by the whooping milestone in their career.
They took home their first Best Presenter award in 2001 and mentioned this during their speech when they listed the events of that year.
“Tony Blair was the Prime Minister and Newcastle United qualified for the champions league, that goes to show just how long ago that was,” joked Ant McPartlin.
Watching from home, Piers took the opportunity to slam Ant and Dec after their win by tweeting a thinly-veiled dig on social media.
The former presenter posted a sarcastic congratulations to his audience of 7.9 million followers, he tweeted: “Wow! What a shock! Congrats to Ant & Dec.
“Thoroughly deserved 20th consecutive win – the way they held those jungle contestants to account during the pandemic was absolutely brilliant.”
Piers concluded his post with a clapping hands emoji and an NTAs hashtag.
Ant and Dec spoke out about their win when asked about the victory of the outspoken media personality.
Ant told Express.co.uk, The Mirror and Daily Star: “We don’t have a lot to say about Piers Morgan,” while Dec interjected, “It’s not about him tonight!”
Earlier this month, Piers told The Mirror: “I deserve to win because everyone’s sick and tired of Ant and Dec automatically winning this award, which bears no relation to reality.
He stated: “They’ve done nothing special in the last year, even they would admit that.”
