And Just Like That… Sex and the City got a revival series. After years off the air and nonstop pleas from many viewers, HBO Max approved a limited series that will continue the stories of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her friends. Well, some of her friends.
Notably, Kim Cattrall won’t be reprising her role on the show amid her icy relationship with her co-stars. It’s not yet known how the revival will handle her absence. But fans of Sex and the City are offering up plenty of ideas in the meantime.
The ‘Sex and the City’ revival ‘And Just Like That…’ is on the way
Following weeks of rumors, multiple outlets confirmed on Jan. 10 that Sex and the City is getting a revival series. According to Variety, the show will follow Bradshaw and her friends Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York as they “navigate love and friendship in their 50s.”
There aren’t many known details beyond that, but the outlet reports that the 10-episode program will start shooting in the spring of 2021 in New York.
Fans weigh in on how Kim Cattrall’s absence from the ‘Sex and the City’ revival should be addressed
There’s no doubt that producers have a big task on their hands when it comes to figuring out how to address Cattrall’s absence given the significance and centrality of her character, Samantha Jones.
For fans, they have several ideas they say would be fitting ways to write off Jones from the revival. Some shared their thoughts on what should happen to the PR agent through a Reddit poll that included the options of Jones either finding her “true love,” moving out of the country, and rarely traveling back, dying after her cancer comes back, falling out with her friends, or basically just disappearing.
The results of the poll are…
Over 90% of voters picked the first option. But some couldn’t see that for Jones, especially considering she remained close with her friends after moving to Los Angeles with Jerry.
“I think Sam passing away would be the most fitting ending for her and her character on this show. No other explanation can be good enough because we saw how Sam moved to LA and still kept in touch daily with the girls. You can’t just have her move somewhere else never to be heard from again, it’s just not fitting to the pattern of her character,” the Redditor wrote.
But at the same time, would her possible death impact the overall reception and tone of the show? One person said yes.
“Killing her is unnecessary and while it often touches on difficult topics, the show is a comedy at heart. Her being dead would make rewatching the old episodes depressing and I don’t think they’d do that to the rest of the show. It’d also be harder to laugh at a new 10 ep lighthearted special when a fan-favorite is announced dead…” the message read.
Others in the comment section floated additional ideas, like Samantha’s PR agency blowing up and having work take her all around the world. But it’s also hard to tell how an open-ended resolution like that would be received.
No matter what happens, Samantha Jones will always be a part of ‘Sex and the City’
Parker shared this sentiment on Instagram after the news of the revival came out.
After sharing the teaser trailer on her page, she wrote in part in a comment to a fan, “Samantha isn’t part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do. X”
