Strictly 2021 series set for major rule change as show bosses ditch Covid axings

Strictly Come Dancing show boss Sarah James revealed a big change over how the show will handle things if a contestant tests positive for Covid in 2021's series, which will give hope to the celebs and dancers.

Last year Nicola Adams and her partner Katya Jones were sadly forced to leave the show after Katya tested positive for Covid.

Ahead of the official start date on September 18, Sarah confirmed that thanks to the new short isolation period required, testing positive now may not mean a couple has to automatically leave the competition.

"Keeping everybody safe and keeping the show going is obviously our priority," she stressed.

Sarah explained: "We will have a limited audience again like last year, so we will have some audience, which is nice, but it won't be a full audience sadly."

She continued: "The better news is, obviously last year the isolation period if you received positive test was 14 days, but this year, it's 10 days.

"So if a celebrity does receive a positive test, it doesn't necessarily mean that they're out of the competition."

She hopes that the dancers would be able to catch up, explaining: "It might be that they could miss a week and still get enough training in to return. So that is slightly better news than last year."

Sarah took over as Executive Producer of Strictly from 2019.

She also confirmed that Covid means the iconic Blackpool performance won't take place once again.

"Sadly, we won't be able to go to Blackpool, to keep everybody safe. Blackpool Tower is amazing, but behind the scenes is really, really small, all the dressing rooms are tiny!" she explained.

"Keeping everybody distanced there is almost impossible, and obviously everybody stays in a hotel together up there. So that was a reason we made that decision," added Sarah.

Fans will be pleased to hear that some of their favourite show themes will be making a return.

"Movie Week will be back, Musicals Week will be back, and Halloween will be back which we didn't do last year".

There's some good festive news too: "We're also going to be doing our Christmas special as per previous years. So we'll have a proper Christmas special in our studio this year."

There's lots for Strictly fans to look forward to this year, with a line-up including Tom Fletcher, Katie McGlynn, Dan Walker and Robert Webb.

Viewers will find out who the celebs have been partnered with when the show starts on Saturday, September 18th.
