The Games fans praise Colson Smith as he shares why he only learnt to swim five weeks ago

Coronation Street actor Colson Smith has been praised by fans after revealing he only learned to swim five weeks ago, in order to compete in new reality show The Games.

Colson, 23, who plays Craig Tinker in the long-running soap, last night took to the pool as part of the new ITV series, which features 12 celebs are battling it out in a series of different sporting events.

However, before taking the plunge in front of millions of viewers, he revealed that just five weeks ago he could not swim at all, and that he had only begun learning in order to take part in the show – putting him at a huge disadvantage to his rivals.

He came last in the swim race, broadcast live from Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on the show hosted by Holly Willoughby and Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff, but still had plenty to celebrate.

Colson finished with a time of 47.71 seconds, a personal best that put him just 15 seconds behind Love Island star winner Wes Nelson.

And afterwards he shared his delight at simply being able to take part.

"I’m buzzing," he said. "I must be one of the happiest people to come last in an event.

"For me that’s massive, it’s 10 seconds quicker than what I did in the last training!"

Colson has also shared details of his incredible weight loss on the show after shedding a whopping 10 stone after being 'addicted' to running.

Comedian Young Filly, in the studio during the show, described him as "my winner."

And fans agreed taking to social media to share their admiration.

One said on Twitter: said: “@colsonsmith what a star!! Definitely a winner in the swimming race when 5 weeks ago he couldn't swim and now he's just smashed his PB! His smile at the end just summed it up #TheGames”

Another said: “@colsonsmith you’re my hero #TheGames”, while a third posted, “YES! @colsonsmith you absolutely smashed that swim, congratulations to you! You should be incredibly proud of yourself! #TheGames."
