Wokeness is no mere academic threat and other commentary

We pray that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver was just making a bad joke Sunday when he closed his prayer marking the 117th Congress with “amen and awoman,” but he definitely managed to shine a light on the absurdity of the push for gender-inclusive language.

As an ordained Methodist preacher, the Missouri Democrat surely knows that “amen” is Hebrew for “so be it” and has nothing to do with actual men. But his proud addition plainly sought to celebrate Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s new code of conduct, which aims to eliminate all gender-specific language from official House documents.

Instead, of course, he simply illustrated how ham-handed that drive truly is — to the point of self-satire, as if words like “mention,” “mandate” or the double-whammy of “amendment” are next on the chopping block.

“Awoman” certainly suggests that, as Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.) put it on Twitter, “Unfortunately, facts are irrelevant to progressives.”  And identity-politics pandering justifies turning a prayer into a page out of Dr. Seuss.
