A manhunt has been launched after four men allegedly kidnapped and raped a pregnant woman in Greece.

Three of the men, aged 19, 21 and 27, have been arrested by Greek police but one suspect remains at large.

The men are accused of abducting the 25-year-old Greek woman from Omonia and transporting her by taxi to an underground apartment in central Athens where she was raped.

Local media reported that the woman, who has not been named, told police that she was three months pregnant.

The alleged assault took place on Wednesday morning in Agios Panteleimon, Protothema.gr reported.

It is not clear whether the driver of the taxi was one of the four alleged attackers, all of whom are described in local media as being from Pakistan.

The woman escaped and reported the incident to police, resulting in the arrest of three of the four suspected attackers.

Last month, a 34-year-old Pakistani man was arrested on suspicion of attempting to rape several underage girls and a 22-year-old.

In 2012, the brutal beating and rape of a young girl on the island of Paros drew widespread attention.

The teenager was found unconscious with a severe head injury that has resulted in permanent damage.

Her attacker was later identified as Ahmed Waqas, an undocumented migrant from Pakistan, who was arrested in Athens. He was later sentenced to life in prison.

The case prompted a crackdown on undocumented migrants in the Greek capital, with some 4,500 police arresting 7,000 people in just 72 hours.

It also led to a series of violent racist attacks against migrants in Greece, including the murder of a 19-year-old Iraqi man in Athens by assailants on motorcycles who had reportedly earlier targeted two foreigners who managed to escape.

Greece has a relatively low rate of violent crimes for a large European country and is frequently featured on lists of safest destinations for solo female travellers.
